OUR APPROACH

Inclusive

Accessible

Collaborative

Most people who find their way to Unique Community come from marginalised backgrounds, often having experienced significant trauma or social isolation.

We shape our welcoming community around their unique needs.

The personal stories and experiences of each person are entwined within every aspect of our programs, inspiring creative sessions that centre their perspectives.

Daring new shows are created and staged annually at a professional theatre space, giving our community the platform to share their explorations with a wider audience.

THE STORK PROJECT

The Stork Project offers weekly performing arts workshops to families from Ukraine. Participants develop theatre skills, share experiences and create a new musical together that is performed on a professional theatre stage in London. • “They have done some amazing and exemplary work in my local community for a few years now. Even during Covid it was such a relief for them to help my daughter and engage her remotely. Thank you for all you do.”

    Family of Participant Feedback

  • "BYT is a great results driven creative platform for kids in Brent. My child as been part of it for past 3 years and loves every bit. Every penny council invests in this programme is worth it."

    Family of Participant Feedback

  • "The staff do an astonishing and outstanding job in supporting the young people from across the borough of Brent. It would be unfathomable to calculate the great effect Brent Youth Theatre has had on our son and other young people. We hope he can carry on attending this wonderful community initiative."

    Family of Participant Feedback

  • "My younger brother was part of backstage crew and it really helped him come out of his shell. His confidence wasn’t particularly great: his social skills needed building after Covid-19, he had just moved schools, and he found his new SEN school difficult to adjust to. Being part of backstage crew meant that he could interact with a whole new group of young people, which further developed his interpersonal skills. Backstage crew also helped him practice his writing and reading skills outside of the classroom - something that he has struggled with for many years; The positive reinforcement he got from being part of the group was felt across all parts of his life. The opportunities provided by Brent Youth Theatre are integral to young people’s lives, and being able to provide this for free ensures people from low-income households - such as my young brother - can benefit from services like this."

    Family of Participant Feedback

  • "This is a fantastic, nurturing program, run by wonderful people who go above and beyond to make the children feel valued and understood, and to help them discover their talents and unique skills. Their passion for the arts is infectious."

    Community Feedback

  • "I have been in the audience for several of BYT performances and am the parent of one of the facilitators. What I have observed at BYT has opened my eyes to the ways in which performing art can support and enrich people's lives, both for the audience and for those taking part. It is wonderful and at times moving to see the way in which the young people develop and support each other in their participation and the way in which they are valued without question or judgement. That this organisation is struggling for funding is completely wrong and ai sincerely hope that funding can be achieved so they can continue their invaluable work."

    Community Feedback

  • "I have been lucky enough to be part of some of unique communities’ projects as a facilitator and can’t stress enough how important this work is for the young people and community of Brent. It is so evident how much joy young people get out of these sessions, and how the sessions contribute so positively with their mental health and well-being. I have been able to witness first hand how young people have flourished, developing confidence and a better sense of self. The founder and other members of staff care so much and work above and beyond for the young people. They all work above and beyond their job descriptions, putting in so much effort. It’s admirable and incredible and feels like such a close-knit, inclusive and welcome community and family to be a part of."

    Staff Feedback

  • "BYT and Unique Community are a wonderful space for young people to explore their creativity, and I have been fortunate enough to see how the young people of Brent have benefitted from their programs, from their personal development and confidence, to creative growth. I support this program, and can’t wait see how this support will help enrich an already lovely program."
